Description
Pentti Sarpaneva was a Finnish jewellery designer and designer. Beginning in the 1950s, he specialised in jewellery that ordinary people could afford. He also designed decorative and functional objects. Sarpaneva’s early jewellery pieces were handmade at home, featuring enamel surfaces and recycled materials. Sarpaneva began his design career in the early 1960s at an atelier established within Merkkikeskus Sorsa. In the mid-1960s, he started collaborating with Kalevala Koru, and later, in 1967, he became the artistic designer for Turun Hopea Oy, where he worked as artistic director until his death.
Kalevala Koru was founded in 1937, when Elsa Heporauta and a group of socially active women wanted to bring the beauty of our foremothers’ jewelry within reach of the modern women of their time. Replicas and adaptations of ancient jewelry received an enthusiastic response and quickly became highly popular. Kalevala Koru was established as a tribute to the Finnish Kalevala woman.
To this day, Kalevala Koru is owned by Kalevalaisten Naisten Liitto (the Kalevala Women’s Union), which supports and promotes Finnish cultural work. All Kalevala Koru jewelry is handmade in Finland.
Pentti Sarpaneva designed, in the 1960s, for Kalevala Koru a collection of relief-like, Byzantine-inspired bronze and silver jewelry. A novelty of the period was the rough and sculptural cast jewelry, which was developed simultaneously by Pentti Sarpaneva and Björn Weckström.
The black/bluish stone in the pendant is a spectrolite.
