Description

Oiva Toikka was a Finnish designer and ceramicist. From 1963 onward, Toikka worked at the Nuutajärvi glass factory. He is best known for his glass birds, but in addition he designed a wide range of other art glass as well as utilitarian tableware. He also designed fabrics for Marimekko. Toikka was fascinated by glass as a material because of its fast-paced working process. His glass works are characterized by experimental spirit, vibrant colors and often a playful lightness. Toikka received several awards for his work during his career: the Kaj Franck Design Prize, the Prince Eugen Medal, and the Pro Finlandia Medal. In 2003, he was named an honorary member of the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Oiva Toikka’s first glass bird, Sieppo, was launched in 1972 at the Nuutajärvi glass factory. Each glass bird is unique and handmade, making them one-of-a-kind works of art.

This peachy Sieppo glass bird is in very good condition.
