Description
Kumela Glass Factory Ltd. was a glassworks operating in Kumela, Riihimäki, from 1936 to 1985. It was founded by the brothers Toivo, Ilmari, and Oiva Kumela. Initially, the factory was known for painting and engraving glass objects; after the wars, it also produced household glass, medical glass, bottles, and lighting glass. In 1955, the first designer joined Kumela; Sirkku Kumela-Lehtonen (1933–2025), the daughter of Ilmari Kumela. She had trained as a ceramicist — since glass design education was not yet available in Finland — and began designing functional glassware for the family business. She remained Kumela’s chief designer until 1976. The Kumela family sold their business to the Humppila glassworks in 1976, but operations first ended in bankruptcy in 1981 under the name Maderakka Ltd., and finally in 1985.
There are altogether 15 champagne glasses left.
