Description
Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect, designer and academic. Since the 1950s, he has been nationally and internationally recognized as a master and one of the key figures associated with modernist architecture. Among Aalto’s numerous works are buildings not only in Finland but also across Europe and in the United States. A characteristic feature of Aalto’s approach was treating a building as a total work of art — including its furniture and lighting. His interest in glass also led him into design, offering opportunities for new, freeform ways of working with the material. The world-famous Savoy Vase (a.k.a. Aalto Vase) was created following his victory in the Karhula-Iittala glass design competition in 1936.
The Aalto Vase has been described as an icon of Finnish design and has been called one of the most famous glass objects in the world, as well as the most famous vase in the world.
