Description

Gunnel Nyman was an internationally renowned Finnish designer. In addition to glass design, she also designed furniture, lighting and textiles.
She studied furniture design and at the beginning of her career, she worked in the Functionalist style, designing furniture for Stockmann and Boman’s furniture factory, as well as lighting fixtures for the Idman lighting factory. Although Nyman was not formally trained as a glass artist, she turned to glass design in the 1930s and 1940s and worked with several leading Finnish glassworks, including the Riihimäen Lasi glass factory, Iittala at Karhula-Iittala, and, toward the end of her career, the Nuutajärvi glassworks.
Nyman received significant international recognition, including a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in 1937, as well as medals at the Milan Triennale exhibitions. Her works are included in the collections of several prestigious museums, such as the British Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although Nyman died young, the influence of her glass art extended far into post-war Finnish design.

The spiked mold technique used in the art glass has been in use for hundreds of years, but in Finland it is particularly associated with Nyman’s production at the Nuutajärvi glass factory in the 1940s. In this method, air bubbles are created in the glass, which is blown while being rotated inside the spiked mold. The production of spiked mold glass designed by Nyman continued until the 1960s, and in 1987 a small special series of vases was made for sale at the Finnish Glass Museum’s Nyman exhibition.

The art glass is in good condition.
