Description
The Finnish sculptor Carl Wilhelm “Ville” Vallgren began studying architecture in Helsinki at the age of 15, but switched to sculpture studies in Paris in 1877. There, he worked at the heart of contemporary artistic movements and became internationally known not only for his intimate small-scale sculptures, but also for utilitarian objects featuring female figures in Symbolist or Art Nouveau style. Years later, Vallgren returned to work in Finland.
Female figures, ranging from Madonnas to dancers, were among Vallgren’s favorite subjects. Strong emotions such as joy and sorrow were also important themes. In addition, religious subjects and funerary monuments form a significant part of his work. In Finland, Vallgren’s best-known work is the Havis Amanda statue at the Market Square in Helsinki.
