Description
Sakari Pykälä was a Finnish sculptor best known for his bird-themed wooden sculptures.
Pykälä began his career as a glass designer at the Riihimäen lasitehdas between 1955 and 1958, where he designed art glass objects and also created models for utility glassware. However, he later left design work to focus entirely on sculpture.
Birds remained a central theme throughout his 40-year artistic career. Among his most significant works is a large-scale elm sculpture of Finland’s national patron saint, Saint Henry, placed in the Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome.
Wooden sculpture is in very good condition for its age.
Observations: Minor age-related wear. There is most likely a varnish leak on the lower wing.
