Description
Rafael Wardi (1928-2021) was a Finnish painter. Wardi had an exceptionally long career that spanned over 70 years. Wardi was known for his colorful works, with subjects ranging from still lifes and figures to cityscapes and landscapes. Most of the works he painted before the late 1990s were executed in oil, but toward the end of the decade he shifted to using pastels. Alongside these, he also produced watercolors, drawings, and prints.
The portrait of President Tarja Halonen completed in 2002 attracted widespread attention and ultimately brought the artist’s name to the awareness of a broader public.
Wardi’s work, however, didn’t limit to the visual arts alone. He also designed opera sets and costumes and participated in dance productions. In addition, he worked as a teacher at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and was involved in the development of art therapy at Nikkilä Hospital.
Wardi was chosen as Artist of the Year in 1984 and Artist of the Helsinki Festival in 1999. He was awarded the Pro Finlandia Award in 1973, the State Fine Arts Prize in 1986 and the Alfred Kordelin Foundation Honorary Award in 1998.
The painting is in good condition.
