Description
Oiva Toikka was a Finnish designer and ceramicist. Oiva Toikka worked as a designer for Wärtsilä Arabia from 1956 to 1959, and for a few years as an art teacher after that. From 1963 onward, Toikka worked at the Nuutajärvi glass factory. He is best known for his glass birds, but in addition he designed a wide range of other art glass as well as utilitarian tableware. He also designed fabrics for Marimekko. Toikka was fascinated by glass as a material because of its fast-paced working process. His glass works are characterized by experimental spirit, vibrant colors and often a playful lightness. Toikka received several awards for his work during his career: the Kaj Franck Design Prize, the Prince Eugen Medal, and the Pro Finlandia Medal. In 2003, he was named an honorary member of the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Observations: Arabia sticker. No signature. Couple of small air bubbles in the glass mass. Slight surface wear near the candle holder recess (it is visible only in certain angle of light) and on the bottom. Two small chips along the upper edge.
