Description
Kalevala Koru was founded in 1937, when Elsa Heporauta and a group of socially active women wanted to bring the beauty of our foremothers’ jewelry within reach of the modern women of their time. Replicas and adaptations of ancient jewelry received an enthusiastic response and quickly became highly popular. Kalevala Koru was established as a tribute to the Finnish Kalevala woman.
To this day, Kalevala Koru is owned by Kalevalaisten Naisten Liitto (the Kalevala Women’s Union), which supports and promotes Finnish cultural work. All Kalevala Koru jewelry is handmade in Finland.
The original model for this Karkun riipus necklace, from Palviala in Karkku, Finland, dates back to the Viking Age, which is considered the most distinctive period of Finland’s Iron Age. During that time, influences from the east, west, and south converged in Finland, and inspired by them, Finnish jewelers created original and distinctive forms.
This Karkun riipus necklace is in beautiful condition, as good as new.
