Description
Inkeri Toikka, née Iissalo, was a Finnish glass artist. Toikka initially followed in her father’s footsteps and pursued the visual arts, studying at the Turku Drawing School from 1950 to 1952. She then studied ceramic art at the Institute of Industrial Arts and, after graduating, began working in the art industry department of Arabia.
In the summer of 1956, Inkeri worked as an intern at the Nuutajärven Lasitehdas, at the same time as her future husband, Oiva Toikka. They married in 1957, and in 1961 the couple moved to Sodankylä, where Oiva had obtained a position as an art teacher.
In 1963, the family settled in Nuutajärvi, where Oiva worked as a designer at the glassworks. Inkeri, meanwhile, worked in several roles, including as an art teacher at Urjala Secondary School from 1966 to 1969. From 1970 onward, Inkeri also joined the glassworks as a designer. The essence of Inkeri Toikka’s design is found in brightly coloured, often asymmetrical pitchers and vases, as well as animal sculptures and decorative objects.
This glass figurine is beautiful and in very good condition.
