Description

Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect, designer and academic. Since the 1950s, he has been nationally and internationally recognized as a master and one of the key figures associated with modernist architecture. Among Aalto’s numerous works are buildings not only in Finland but also across Europe and in the United States. A characteristic feature of Aalto’s approach was treating a building as a total work of art — including its furniture and lighting. His interest in glass also led him into design, offering opportunities for new, freeform ways of working with the material.

Aino Marsio-Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer, as well as the artistic director of Artek. In the early stages of her career, she worked in several architectural offices before joining Alvar Aalto’s firm in 1924. Aino and Alvar were married in October of that year. Marsio-Aalto worked in her husband’s architectural office, designing both in close collaboration with him and independently. She also created designs for ceramics, glass, lighting, printed fabrics, and unique textiles.

Aino and Alvar Aalto designed the Aalto Flower together. The Aalto Flower consists of four different free-form vessels: a shallow dish, two bowls, and a vase. When stacked inside one another, they form a beautiful sculptural glass flower.
This particular vase belongs to the series and serves as the top vase of the flower arrangement.
Aalto Flower was first introduced at the New York World’s Fair in 1939.

This Aalto Flower top vase is in good condition.
Observations: Few small air bubbles in the glass mass, couple of tiny cracks at the top edge and minor wear on the bottom. Shown in the pictures.
