Description

Gunnel Nyman was an internationally renowned Finnish designer. In addition to glass design, she also designed furniture, lighting and textiles.

The spiked mold technique used in the vase has been in use for hundreds of years, but in Finland it is particularly associated with Nyman’s production at the Nuutajärvi glass factory in the 1940s. In this method, air bubbles are created in the glass, which is blown while being rotated inside the spiked mold. The production of spiked mold glass designed by Nyman continued until the 1960s, and in 1987 a small special series of vases was made for sale at the Finnish Glass Museum’s Nyman exhibition.
