Description

Karhulan Lasi Oy was a glassworks located in Kotka, Finland, which operated from 1889 onwards. Initially, its main production focused on household glassware and window glass. Karhula also produced a considerable amount of crystal glass, with production reportedly beginning in 1900, according to a publication by the Finnish Glass Museum. In addition to the domestic market, Karhula crystal was exported to Europe, America and Australia, among other destinations.
The factory’s most successful period came in the 1930s, in collaboration with Iittala, when, among other achievements, the Bölgeblick tableware designed by Aino Marsio-Aalto won a gold medal at the Milan Triennales. Karhula produced the first Savoy vases designed by Alvar Aalto, as well as glassworks by other leading Finnish designers associated with Iittala, including Göran Hongell and Tapio Wirkkala.
The factory’s golden age lasted until the 1950s, after which it ceased producing art glass and focused on bottle manufacturing, including Wirkkala’s Finlandia bottle. The factory finally closed in 2009.

This beautiful sea-green crystal bowl is in very good condition for its age. The flower-motif cutting in the crystal required exceptional craftsmanship, a skill that is now increasingly rare to find.

Observations: Some small air bubbles in the glass mass. The bowl has some scratching inside, light scratching on the bottom and a tiny chip on the rim. Also minor wear on the outer surface. See more details in the pictures.
