Description
Pentti Kaskipuro (1930-2010) was a Finnish pioneer of graphic art. He was especially known for his drypoint and aquatint works, though he also produced some oil paintings. Kaskipuro found his subjects primarily in the kitchen and in everyday objects. Simple still lifes, a sense of timelessness, and a careful balance of light and shadow characterize the work of the so-called “Master K.”
Kaskipuro worked as a teacher of printmaking at the University of Industrial Arts Helsinki from 1965 to 1974, and as an artist professor from 1974 to 1979. His period of teaching was also referred to as the “Kaskipuro School,” and many later well-known printmakers were among his students.
Kaskipuro held numerous exhibitions in Finland and abroad, and he represented Finland in many different biennials during the 1950s and 1960s. He received several awards for his achievements, including the Prince Eugen Medal in 1974. He was named Artist of the Year at the Helsinki Festival in 1979, was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1971, and received the honorary title of professor in 1990.
